Nashville Flood
04:23
|
|||
lines on the mirror, mississippi mud
a gospel rain storm, a nashville flood
if we all get right, what’s left to choose?
jesus gonna show us what we got to lose
thou shalt not, but they probably will
if it comes in a powder or pretty little pill
you got the corporation now still on your back
until they turn around and sell the slack
there’s a pretty little girl scared to come back home
a brand new habit, the rest all gone
a kid from out in kansas signed his x in blood
barely ankle deep in the nashville flood
now that’s everything you want; what else you need?
besides some red letter scripture, some bathtub speed
keep thinking that stuff’s gonna save your soul
500,000 down, one more to go
so go sing another song about your country roots
something about a river or thousand dollar boots
you sell ‘em all that stuff, if it makes you feel good
they can dive head first in the nashville flood
so now you’re living in a hotel, rural route 5
with a couple old friends, just barely alive
the habit’s here to stay, money’s all gone
you’re way too proud to come back home
you got a rose tattooed where her name used to be
the money ain’t for nothing, the chicks ain’t free
make your folks real proud, son, just like you should
wash it all away in the nashville flood

The Colour
03:44
|
|||
got no one to blame you see
fever got a hold of me
went out west to strike some gold
the road was long, the trail was hard
slept out underneath the stars
i made creede before the snow
i know there’s gold up in the hills
gonna turn them into dollar bills
or jacob randall carter ain’t my name
in time the only thing i owned
was a worn out pick and a back that’s bowed
and an empty hole they call a mine
i packed it up and sold the rights
headed out to telluride
picked up work on that rail line
the days were long, the nights were cold
that rail was shipping out that gold
soon enough they’re all gonna know my name
my buddy ray helped build the pass
dynamite from his own stash
buried deep between the ties
we partnered up and ran the lines
two vantage points above the pines
primed that cap and bid our time
when that last train comes around the bend
it will be too late to comprehend
i’ll be there to gather what remains
sheriff boyd caught wind of me
wrangled up some deputies
they lit out the break of day
i can’t recall the day too well
put me here in this dark cell
never made my getaway
i really don’t know what went wrong
but that fever’s like a siren song
sunday morning is my hanging day
when they hang me from that white oak tree,
i hope the town shows up to see
every single one’s gonna know my name
every single one’s gonna know my name

Eunice and the Bear
04:02
|
|||
granddaddy was a rambler just like me
eunice calmed him down when he was 23
every day hunting those blue ridge hills
his folks said hunting won’t pay the bills
killed himself a bear, hung his head on the wall
eunice let him do it, didn’t like it at all
starts those way up nights with those low down days
lord please bless this house that jumps, sings, and prays
every little chance the story got told
the bear got mean, the young man got old
eunice couldn’t help but sit back and grin
when he’d talk about killing that bear again
they say when good things come they come in threes
and good things always stop to say thanks and please
proud and strong, set me on his knee
someday son you’ll kill a bear like me
the hope, the sweat, the climb and the fall
and the bear looks kinda cool hanging on your wall
this highway’s just as dark as those blue ridge hills
hunting still won’t last or pay the bills
every little chance, every little win
the old man laughs, eunice just grins
the hope, the sweat, the climb and the fair
for the love, for the kids, for eunice and the bear

Kerosene
05:36
|
|||
can we settle for hopeful?
could you hope for the same?
like there was one last honest soul with daddy’s last name
i can’t remember
if it’s a memory or a dream
but i hope it burns slow
like kerosene
can we hang on forgiveness?
find something to blame
like that girl just south of PA with no last name
her eyes shine bright now
were they blue; were they green?
i can see ‘em burn slow
like kerosene
living out in redemption
send my stuff through the mail
there’s an old friend out here that wishes you well
i am almost certain it’s a memory, not a dream
cause i can feel it hurt slow
like kerosene
hope it burns slow like kerosene…

Last Night's Dress
03:52
|
|||
shoulda seen it coming, shoulda drawn the line
shoulda felt it coming for me this time
it’s hard to fill the days when the days don’t feel
the proof’s in the pleasure, the pleasure’s in the pill
watch you pour in all sticky and thin
with the lies that never really meant to hurt, i guess
here’s to showing up with no makeup
for the folks who’ve never seen you
in last night’s dress
shoulda known better, shoulda learned from this
shoulda learned to settle for things i’ve missed
probably never see it till i’ve seen it through
it’s worse for me when it’s better for you
guess we both want something for nothing
guess we both want it all for free
guess we’ll all learn to settle for something
for me
shoulda seen it coming, shoulda drawn the line
shoulda felt it coming for me this time
it’s hard to fill the days when the days don’t feel
the proof’s in the pleasure, the pleasure’s in the pill

Home No More
04:24
|
|||
for thirty years i’ve worked this land
i’ve built this farm with my own two hands
the bank’s going to take everything i own
the blood and sweat can’t repay this loan
my home ain’t my home, ain’t my home no more
they’re going to change the locks on my front door
my home ain’t my home, ain’t my home no more
the summer drought dried up all my crop
i prayed for rain, didn’t get a drop
the winter flood washed my seed away
the bank’s coming for my deed today
i ain’t got no money, all my savings spent
a mind full of worry, pockets full of lint
nowhere to turn, ain’t got no plan
just $27 in a coffee can
i used to wake the morning at the break of dawn
now i stand in line for the check i draw
i never thought that hard work could ever fail
but now the bank’s got my farm for sale

Star Spangled Blues
04:51
|
|||
somebody dug a hole, six foot cold
somebody laid down, somebody got old
somebody has to guess, somebody has to choose
somebody has to win and somebody has to lose
and somebody has to live with the star spangled blues
anybody brings a crowd, anybody comes around
anybody gets up, anybody gets down
anybody gets tight, anybody gets loose
anybody gets mad and anybody who can’t prove
that they didn’t have to pay for the star spangled blues
nobody wants to do it, nobody goes first
everybody lays down, nobody gets hurt
nobody wants to hear it, yesterday’s news
nobody believes that, anyway and everybody pays those dues
we all have to wake up with the star spangled blues
somebody comes to save us, everybody gets pissed
anybody starts a movement, nobody gives a shit
everybody loves a winner, nobody likes to lose
somebody has to guess, somebody has to choose
somebody chooses wrong, nobody takes the blame
anybody points the finger, all stays the same
somebody starts it over, we all play along
and everybody likes to talk about them folks who can’t prove
that they didn’t have to pay for the star spangled blues
and we all have to live with the star spangled blues

Susan
05:42
|
|||
susan, i’m calling to see if you’re home
a few years without you is a few years too long
i wish i could tell you i’m doing just fine
i wish i could change more than your mind
guess i should be moving
guess i shoulda run
never meant to miss you
never loaded the gun
the kids came to see me at this time last year
my youngest in fremont always loved it out here
never seen me look better, never seen me so good
look forward to something; change it all if i could
eight years turned sober, or sober enough
they said it’d be easy; lord knows its been tough
the friends you called fancy, they ain’t been around
the crowd’s still together, but the bar’s been closed down
i guess i should tell you that i ain’t seen the kids
i ain’t closed the bar, but the IRS is
sober is a word for quitters and politicians
the judge in ventura gave me 8 years in federal prison
there were jobs that went easy and some that turned hot
like that branch out in torrance, i almost got caught

Every Other Day
06:57
|
|||
if it ever meant a thing to you
everything it brought you through
it never meant that much to me
easy is just a word to use
and free was always bent and bruised
easy ain’t cheap and cheap ain’t free
and all those scars you keep hid away
will open up and bleed every other day
if you’ve been around before
you know they’re gonna want some more
than what you got left to give
nobody told you when to run
a deep breath till it’s done
even so easy to forgive
and all those fears you keep hid away
will be your best chance every other day
you’re gonna want to step inside
cause you’re gonna need a place to hide
they’re gonna want to get their way
it’ll be your best chance every other day
if you’ve been around before
you know you’re gonna want some more
than what you got left to give
nobody told you when to run
a deep breath til it’s done
even so easy to forgive

Silver and Pearls
03:16
|
|||
well, anna i’m in love with you
and anna says she loves you too
and everything’s all right with the day
every day is oh so long
you try so hard to get along
and anna just stands up and walks away
so wake up, get dressed, go out
fill your days up with regrets and other girls
everything’s just silver and pearls
then anna says let’s try again
and everything’s all right again
except for that one thing that you won’t say
there’s everything you put her through
and words don’t mean that much to you
and anna just stands up and walks away
now anna’s so in love with you
and you tell her you love her too
and everything’s all right with the day
every day gets oh so long
try so hard to get along
until you just stand up and walk away

This Time Around
03:37
|
|||
guess i never really wrote a love song
guess i never really had to try
guess that’s why it’s taken me so long
guess in time we’ll let it go by
just to make myself feel better
just to keep me safe and sound
if i’m ever gonna get it right
guess it’ll be this time around
in a way it moves a lot faster
in a way it seems so slow
any way that we try and cling to
any way we let it all go
so here’s a song that your world can sing to
here’s a song to carry in your heart
here’s the thing to keep us all together
when we’re a thousand miles apart
